William L. "Willie" Grindstaff "Wunder Instructor - Inspirational Promoter of the Mountain Experience"
Willie Grindstaff has lived and shared his passion for the mountain, snow sports and all things outdoors for 60 + years. He started skiing in high school and has been described as the "oldest kid" on the mountain. You might recall his ready smile, or his ski bear costume delighting the kids on the mountain. "Willie's Run" at Crystal Mountain is named after him! Willie has been associated with PNSIA
for 40+ years, working as Ski Instructor, Assistant Ski School Director, Technical Director and finally Ski School Director. Willie and his wife, Jo Jo, joined the Olympia Ski Club in 1962, enrolled their children in the Olympia Ski School, and became ski school instructors. In 1967, the Olympia Ski School moved from White Pass to Crystal Mountain. Willie also worked for the Nagel Ski School for several years and transferred to Crystal Mountain, teaching on weekends for both
Olympia and Crystal Mountain. From 1974 - 1995, Willie was Director and owner of Olympia Ski School serving 450-500 students on Saturdays and about 75 adult students on Thursdays. In 1995, Willie became a full-time instructor for Crystal Mountain, serving as multi-week coordinator for many years. He has since retired from day-to-day operations, but continues to
organize, oversee and help where needed. |
